NOEL TURNS ASIDE 23 SHOTS FOR SHUTOUT IN WOLVES WIN

More often than not, it is the offence that carries the Sudbury Nickel Capital Wolves. On Thursday afternoon, it was the defence – in particular the goaltending – that was the story.

Landon Noel stopped all 23 shots he faced, 10 of those coming in the final period, as the Wolves remained undefeated at the 2008 TELUS Cup with a 3-0 win over the Cole Harbour McCains.

The win clinches a semi-final spot for Sudbury, who will look to become the first Central Region champions since the New Liskeard Cubs in 1997 to play for the National Midget Championship.

As they have so often in the tournament, the Wolves got off to a quick start, as player of the game Deven Stillar opened the scoring just 5:44 in, beating Cole Harbour netminder Philip Wright.

It was 2-0 less than seven minutes later, as Denis Restoule deposited the puck past Wright after Dmitri Lacasse’s point shot had hit the post. Restoule picked up his second point of the period, as did Stefan Harrington, who assisted on both Sudbury goals.

After outshooting the McCains 9-4 in the opening period, the Wolves found themselves in their own for much of the second, mustering only three shots on Wright compared to nine for Cole Harbour.

But the Atlantic Regions champions could not get a puck past Noel, who was at his best late in the frame with the McCains on a 32-second two-man advantage.

The play of their goaltender seemed to spark the Wolves in the final frame, as Kenton Valliant recorded his first goal, and point, of the tournament, blasting a point shot over the blocker of Wright to provide the final margin of victory.

Luke Dillman picked up player of the game honours for the McCains.

The Wolves will look to wrap up an unbeaten round-robin on Friday afternoon, when they take on the Winnipeg Thrashers – who entered play of Thursday as the only team with a perfect 3-0 record – at 1:00 p.m. ET, while Cole Harbour looks to keep their slim playoff hopes alive when they face the Calgary Buffaloes at 9:30 a.m. ET.
