The 2014 RBC Cup marks the 24-year anniversary of the first time Vernon played host to Canada’s National Junior A Championship. Take a trip down memory lane and check out the official event program from the 1990 Centennial Cup.
After two seasons out of the postseason party, the Vernon Vipers are back in the B.C. Hockey League playoffs, and have begun the final push towards the 2014 RBC Cup, facing off with the West Kelowna Warriors.
With the drop of the puck at the RBC Cup just four months away, the Vernon Vipers were active around the Jan. 10 trade deadline, picking up former Surrey captain Brett Mulcahy and blue-liner Dylan Chanter for the stretch run to the RBC Cup.
The Vernon Vipers’ quest for an unprecedented seventh National Junior A Championship, and second national title on home ice, begins Saturday, May 10, when they face the East Region champions in their RBC Cup opener.
The Vernon Vipers raised one 2014 RBC Cup banner to the rafters of Kal Tire Place before their BCHL home opener against the Salmon Arm Silverbacks on Sept. 14; they hope another, more important, banner will join it 12 months from now.
Thanks to a 20-wins-in-21-games run early in the season, three of the league’s top four scorers and a terrific +145 goal differential, the Fort Frances Lakers claimed their first-ever SIJHL regular season championship.
It was a two-horse race between Soo and Kirkland Lake in 2013-14, but when the dust settled it was the Thunderbirds – helped by a 25-game winning streak – sitting atop the NOJHL standings and CJHL national top 20 rankings.
The Truro Bearcats carried the momentum from last spring’s run to the RBC Cup into 2013-14, topping the MHL standings for the first time since 2006-07, and just the second time in franchise history, edging Miramichi for top spot.
The Carleton Place Canadians turned the CCHL into their personal playground, leading the league in goals for, goals against, power play, home record and road record, and put together two winning streaks of at least 15 games.
Led by three of the top eight scorers in the LHJAAAQ, an offence that averaged more than five goals per game and points in 25 of 26 games on home ice, the Panthères de Saint-Jérôme won their second straight regular season title.
For the first time since 1995-96 the Yorkton Terriers won the SJHL’s regular season title; the defending league champions used the No. 1 offence, No. 1 defence and best home-ice record to hold off Battlefords for first place.
This year in the MJHL there was Selkirk, and everybody else. The Steelers rolled to the league’s best record, leading the league in goals for, goals against, power play and penalty kill, and running off a 20-game winning streak.
Just four points separated the top five teams in the B.C. Hockey League, but it was the Langley Rivermen who claimed their city’s first-ever regular season title, earning points in 18 of 19 games after the calendar turned to 2014.
No. 1 offence. No. 1 power play. No. 1 penalty kill. No. 1 home-ice record. It’s not hard to see why the Spruce Grove Saints were the AJHL’s best team in 2013-14, winning their fourth regular season championship in the last six years.
Thanks in large part to the league’s best home record – a 22-5 mark that included to straight home-ice wins to finish the season – and the No. 3 defence, the Kingston Voyageurs wrapped up their first regular season title since 2009-10.
