Team Summary/Sommaire d'Équipe
As goalie Kim Martin goes, so goes the fate of Team Sweden, here in Halifax or anywhere else. Martin played in Salt Lake as a 15-year-old and led her team to a stunning bronze medal with a 2-1 victory over Finland, and now, two years older and two years wiser, she can be considered one of the top women goalies in the world. Unfortunately, precious few of her teammates from that bronze-medal lineup will be joining her in Nova Scotia, making Sweden an unknown quantity for Halifax. Up front, the team will hope for goals from Maria Rooth, Anna Vikman, Danijela Rundqvist, Therese Sjolander, and Erika Holst, all of whom played at the 2002 Olympics. They will be joined by relative newcomers Katarina Timglas, Angelica Lorsell, Pernilla Winberg, Jenny Lindqvist, Helena Tageson, Kristina Lundberg, and Josefin Rudberg. The defence has the potential to be the team’s greatest detriment. After Gunilla Andersson, who has 158 international games to her credit, the team has almost no experience playing at a high level. It includes Frida Nevalainen (22 games), Ylva Lindberg (11), Nanna Jansson (5), and rookies Elin Holmlov and Emma Eliasson. This will be an excellent learning experience for most of the players, but that might translate into many busy nights for Kim Martin.
