RED RUNS AWAY WITH WIN OVER SWEDEN AT DEV CAMP

CALGARY, Alta. – Red spread the offence around Thursday night, with five different players contributing goals in a convincing 5-1 victory over Sweden at Canada’s National Women’s Development Team selection camp.

Sarah Nurse (Hamilton, Ont./University of Wisconsin, WCHA) led the way with a goal and assist, while Kristin O’Neill (Oakville, Ont./Cornell University, ECAC) added two helpers to join Nurse as multi-point scorers for Red.

Just as she had in the first two games for Red, Nurse got the scoring started for her team, getting in the way of a pass in the neutral zone before skating into the high slot and wiring a wrist shot over the glove of Swedish netminder Sarah Berglind at the six-minute mark.

Red controlled the puck for much of the first period, outshooting Sweden by a count of 10-3, although netminder Erica Howe (Orleans, Ont./Brampton, CWHL) was forced to be sharp in the opening 20 minutes.

The offensive floodgates opened for Red in the second, with three goals in less than four minutes.

Jaimie Bourbonnais (Mississauga, Ont./Cornell University ECAC) made it 2-0 at 5:02, gathering in a won face-off by O’Neill and beating Berglind through traffic, and Loren Gabel picked up a loose puck off the side-boards and snapped a shot top shelf for a 3-0 lead at 7:51.

Red struck on the power play only 1:03 after that; crisp passing around the offensive zone led to a goal for Christina Putigna (Hamilton, Ont./Providence College, HE) who waited patiently at the side of the Swedish goal to score her first of camp.

The Swedes ended the Red shutout bid when Olivia Carlsson found Michelle Löwenhielm from behind the net with 4:15 to go, but Shae Labbe (Calgary, Alta/Colgate University, ECAC) restored the four-goal advantage just 22 seconds later.

Howe and Stephanie Neatby (Toronto, Ont./Princeton University, ECAC) combined for the 14-save win, while Berglind was very good in the Swedish goal, finishing with 37 stops.

Red reached a camp-high 42 shots, while holding Sweden to just 15.

The teams will be back on the ice Saturday to close out camp, with a rematch of Monday’s games; Red takes on White (2:30 p.m. MT), while Sweden takes on the CIS all-stars (5 p.m. MT).
