FINLAND EARNS 3-2 SHOOTOUT WIN OVER CANADA AT MECO CUP HOCKEY EVENT

FÜSSEN, Germany – Canada had to settle for a bronze-medal finish Sunday at the Meco Cup women's hockey tournament.

Finland edged the Canadians 3-2 in a shootout to improve its record to 4-1 and finish second in the event. Sweden was first overall with a 5-0 record while Canada was 3-2, losing its final two games in overtime and a shootout, respectively.

Sarah Davis of Paradise, N.L., and Edmonton's Saige Pacholok had the goals in regulation for Canada.

Michelle Karvinen and Pia Lund replied for Finland.

Canada was the lone team with an under-22 roster at the annual tournament, previously known as the MLP Cup. Other countries entered senior women's teams.

“I think it was pretty good from a development standpoint in that Hockey Canada got to see what it needed to see in order to go forward with some of its players,” said head coach Laura Schuler of Toronto. “I think our girls showed a lot of character coming back twice.

“On Saturday we were down twice by a goal and today we came back again and I thought showed pride again.”

Davis opened the scoring just 1:14 after the opening faceoff before the Finns rallied to take a 2-1 lead heading into the second. Pacholok scored to pull Canada even 2-2 at 7:08 of the third that ultimately force overtime.

In the shootout, Finland's Susanna Tapani was the lone player to score, doing so on the Finnish side's third attempt.

Tara Watchorn of Newcastle, Ont., said facing off against older players was a positive experience for the Canadian squad.

“You gain a lot of international experience when you come play over here,” she said. “When you get the chance to play with some of the best in the country you come away a better player.”
