CANADA RED WRAPS UP UNDEFEATED CAMP WITH WIN OVER WHITE

A second-period offensive surge was the difference for Canada Red as it wrapped up an undefeated National Women's Under-22 Team selection camp with a 6-3 win over Canada White on Sunday in Toronto.

Natalie Spooner (Scarborough, ON/Durham, PWHL) scored twice and Haley Irwin (Thunder Bay, ON/University of Minnesota-Duluth, WCHA) added a goal and two assists as Red finished a perfect 4-0 at the week-long camp, with two wins over Canada White and two over a team of Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) all-stars.

Canada White’s powerplay was the story in the opening 20 minutes, converting on both of its opportunities.

Rebecca Johnston (Sudbury, ON/Cornell University, ECAC) re-directed a pass from Britni Smith (Port Perry, ON/St. Lawrence University, ECAC) past Red netminder Christina Kessler (Oakville, ON/Harvard University, ECAC) at the midway point of the period, and Vicki Bendus (Wasaga Beach, ON/Mercyhurst College, CHA) stuffed in a loose puck just 3:32 later, sending Canada White to the dressing room up by a pair.

It took Canada Red just 15 seconds to pull even though, as Bailey Bram (Ste. Anne, MB/Balmoral Hall, MB MAAA) and Courtney Birchard (Mississauga, ON/University of New Hampshire, HE) counted goals just shy of the 10-minute mark of the second period.

Irwin gave Red its first lead three minutes later, but Jennifer Wakefield (Pickering, ON/University of New Hampshire, HE) countered for White just 23 seconds after that to even the back-and-forth contest at 3-3.

Spooner restored Canada Red’s lead for good in the dying seconds of the middle frame, snapping a shot past White goaltender Kristen Young (Calgary, AB/Princeton University, ECAC) to send her team to the intermission up 4-3.

Spooner and Karell Emard (Richelieu, QC/St. Lawrence University, ECAC) rounded out the scoring the third period for Canada Red, putting a cap on a week in which they outscored the opposition 18-8.

With the games in the books, attention turns now to Sunday morning, when head coach Sarah Howald and her staff will choose the 22 players who will make up Canada’s National Women’s Under-22 Team for a three-game series against the USA’s Women’s Under-22 Select Team, beginning Wednesday in Pierrefonds, QC.

Check back with hockeycanada.ca on Sunday morning for Canada’s final roster.
