CANADA WINS THREE-GAME EXHBITION SERIES WITH 2-0 WIN OVER US

Team Canada continued its smothering defense on Sunday morning, shutting out the Americans for the second consecutive game, this time by a 2-0 score.

After a scoreless opening 39 minutes, Hayley McMeekin (Unionville, ON) got the Canadians on the board in the final minute of the second period, roofing a shot past American goaltender Jessie Vetter. Rebecca Johnston (Sudbury, ON) picked up the only assist on McMeekin’s second goal in as many games.

The Canadians continued their shutdown defense in the third period, and got the clinching goal from Sarah Vaillancourt (Sherbrooke, QC), who picked up an empty net goal with just over a minute to go. Meghan Agosta (Ruthven, ON) had the assist.

Canadian goaltenders Shannon Szabados (Edmonton, AB) and Laura Hosier (Sharon, ON) split the game between the pipes, with Szabados making 11 saves, and Hosier 14. Hosier did not allow a goal in her game-and-a-half of work, turning aside all 40 shots she faced. Szabados allowed just two goals on 52 shots, giving the Canadian netminders a miniscule 0.67 goals against average.
