CANADA'S WOMEN'S UNDER-18 HOCKEY TEAM DROPS GAME TWO OF SERIES, 3-1 TO UNITED STATES

BLAINE, Minn. - Canada's women's under-18 hockey team fell 3-1 to the United States on Friday night, setting up a winner-take-all showdown on Sunday.

One day after opening the three-game exhibition series with a come-from-behind 3-2 win, the Canadians allowed a goal in each period.

Despite the loss, coach Jim Fetter said his team played better than it had in Game 1.

“Overall, it was an improvement,” he said. “We were more physical, involved in the play a lot more, created more scoring opportunities, but we just didn't finish.”

Forward Hanna Bunton (Belleville, Ont./Whitby, PWHL) scored Canada's lone goal on the power-play in the first period, with forwards Kennedy Ottenbreit-Daunheimer (Grayson, Sask./Shattuck-St. Mary’s, U.S. Prep) and Eden Murray (Medicine Hat, Alta./Edge School, JWHL) picking up the assists.

The goal came five minutes after the Canadians had fallen behind 1-0. But American Jincy Dunne got the eventual game-winner halfway through the second before a late empty-netter sealed the win.

Kassidy Sauvé (Whitby, Ont./Whitby, EOMMAAAHL) turned in Canada’s second consecutive strong performance in goal with a 40-save effort.

Fetter said although Canada looked more cohesive than it had on Thursday, the Americans were hungrier.

“We were hoping for (a faster start), but they came out and jumped on us right away,” said Fetter. “I don't know if we had a 'we won yesterday’ attitude or not.”

After the two-game split, Fetter said both teams will be hungry to win Sunday's series finale, especially in anticipation of the upcoming world championship.

“If you win it, then you head over to worlds with a little more confidence,” he said. “You just play a little more relaxed.”
