CALGARY, Alta. – Hanna Bunton (Belleville, Ont./Whitby, PWHL) scored the game-winner early in the second period as White held off a third-period push from Kazakhstan to earn a 3-1 victory on Monday night at Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team selection camp.

White made it two-for-two for Canadian teams on the opening day of games at the WinSport Canada Athletic & Ice Complex; Red beat Norway 7-1 earlier Monday in the first game of camp.

Catherine Dubois and Ashleigh Brykaliuk scored the other goals for White, which outshot Kazakhstan 23-13, including 14-1 in a one-sided second period that saw the Canadians enjoy five power plays, although only Bunton, on a perfect cross-ice feed from Breanna Lanceleve (Sackville, N.S./Metro, NSMFHL), could find the back of the net.

Natalya Yakovchuk made it a 2-1 game just 20 seconds into the third period, snapping a shot off the post and past White goaltender Michaela Logan (North Vancouver, B.C./Pursuit of Excellence, CSSHL), but that was all the offence the Kazakhs could muster.

It took White more than 12 minutes of the final period to record a shot on goal, but the first shot was an insurance marker off the stick of Brykaliuk, who one-timed a pass from Sydney Smith (Lethbridge, Alta./Medicine Hat, AMMFHL) past Kazakh netminder Darya Obydennova.

Dubois had opened the scoring late in the first period with an unassisted effort, slipping past the Kazakhstan defence before sliding the puck past Obydennova.

White looks for a 2-0 start against Red in Tuesday’s night all-Canadian battle (7 p.m. MT), while Kazakhstan next sees the ice Thursday morning (11:30 a.m. MT) when it faces Norway.
