CANADA SHUTS OUT FINLAND 6-0 AT WORLD WOMEN’S UNDER-18 CHAMPIONSHIP

STOCKHOLM, Sweden - Laura Stacey (Kleinburg, Ont.) scored twice and added an assist to power Canada to a6-0 rout of Finland at the 2011 IIHF World Women’s Hockey Championship on Sunday.

Stacey opened the scoring in the first period on the powerplay. Sarah Robson, Katarina Zgraja, Gina Repaciand Nicole Kosta added singles as Canada posted its second straight comfortable victory.

“It's nice to have a balanced attack from all different lines,'' said assistant coach Cassie Turner. “Sowe're definitely very happy with that.”
Anne-Renée Desbiens made 10 saves for the shutout.

“There's a lot of positive energy after the win for sure,” said Canada captain Sarah Edney. “We're onlygetting better as we play more games together.”

Canada, which opened the tournament Saturday with a 9-1 rout of Switzerland, fired a whopping 59 shots atFinnish goaltender Isabelle Portnoj.

“We've been working to get pucks to the net and people to the net whenever we get an opportunity.” Turnersaid. “We want to continue to get better with every period, with every game.”

Canada has the day off Monday and will close out the preliminary round Tuesday against Germany.

“They're a pretty physical team and they've won their first two games as well,” Turner said. “We takeevery opponent seriously and we're just going to do our best to prepare against them.”

In other games Sunday, Germany topped Switzerland 4-2 and the United States dumped Japan 7-1. The CzechRepublic played Sweden in the late game.

Quarter-final action begins Wednesday. The medal games are scheduled for Saturday.
