CANADA BUILDS BIG LEAD EN ROUTE TO UNDER-18 WIN OVER U.S.

CALGARY, Alta. – This time, there would be no third period comeback.

Erin Ambrose (Keswick, Ont.) and Jessica Campbell (Melville, Sask.) had a goal and an assist each as Canada’s National Women’s Under-18 Team built a 4-0 third-period lead before holding off a late United States push and earning a 4-2 win on Wednesday night.

The win evened the three-game series at a win apiece – the Americans scored three goals in the third period of Monday’s opening game to erase a Canadian lead and score a 4-3 victory.

It was the 15-year-old Ambrose – the youngest player on the ice – who got the Canadians on the board first, scoring her first international goal by blasting a slap shot through a screen and past U.S. goaltender Kerrin Sperry.

The penalty kill unit helped Canada take a one-goal lead to the first intermission, killing off a 100-second American two-man advantage late in the opening frame.

A power play produced Canada’s second goal early in the second period, as Jamie Lee Rattray (Kanata, Ont.) poked a loose puck past Sperry, and Campbell made it 3-0 midway through the second 20 minutes, outracing a defender and lifting a backhand over the American goaltender.

Shannon Doyle (Baldwin, Ont.) put the final nail in the American coffin with a power play marker of her own just shy of the seven-minute mark of the third period, swooping in from her blueline position to pot a rebound and make it 4-0.

Goals from Melissa Bizzari and Rachael Bona ruined the shutout bid of Canadian netminder Carmen MacDonald (Pictou, N.S.) in the final 10 minutes, but the Americans would get no closer than two goals.

Brigette Lacquette (Waterhen, Man.) and Mélodie Daoust (Valleyfield, Que.) contributed to the Canadian offensive attack with a pair of assists each.

The series wraps up Thursday as the North American rivals meet at the Pengrowth Saddledome at 2:30 p.m. MT.
