2012-13 National Women's Team

Red 3 - White 2 (Shootout)

BIRCHARD SCORES IN THIRD AND SHOOTOUT TO LEAD RED TO FOURTH STRAIGHT WIN

ALGARY, Alta. – The first and second were all about White, but as soon as Courtney Birchard (Mississauga, Ont./Brampton, CWHL) got a hold of the puck in the third, she sparked an exciting comeback that helped send the game into a shootout. And the rest of the game belonged to Red.

But White came out of the dressing room flying in the first, with blueliner Lauriane Rougeau (Beaconsfield, Que./Cornell University) taking advantage of a Red penalty to put the puck into the net at 4:14 in the first, for an early game lead that pushed her team to keep the gap on the scoreboard tight. Jennifer Wakefield (Pickering, Ont./Boston University) added another good-looking goal for White at 17:59 in the second, with help from Rebecca Johnston (Sudbury, Ont./Toronto, CWHL), to make it 2-0 going into intermission.

Although White kept up the pace throughout the third, Birchard was able to get Red on the scoresheet in the first three minutes of the period, and a White penalty was all Red needed to even it out at 2-2, with Vicki Bendus (Wasaga Beach, Ont./Brampton, Ont.) sending the puck soaring into the mesh on a power-play at 4:40 in the final frame, and sending the game into five minutes of overtime.

The players and puck alike flew up and down the ice during the extra frame, with Red managing four shots and White getting one good chance to break the tie, but neither team was able to light up the lamp before time ran out on overtime. Carolyne Prévost scored the first shootout marker for Red, while Birchard secured the 3-2 win over White, and Red’s fourth straight win of the week, with a second shootout goal.

Red caps off Canada’s National Women’s Team September Camp/Fall Festival with a perfect 4-0 record in five days, with a previous 2-1 win over White, a 3-1 victory over the Midget AAA UFA Bisons and a 4-3 overtime victory over the Midget AAA Calgary Flames. White completes camp with one win and three losses, having edged the Midget AAA Red Deer Chiefs 3-2 in a shootout, suffering a 4-2 loss to the Midget AAA Calgary Flames, and also falling 2-1 to Red on opening day.
