2012-13 National Women's Team

Red 4 - Calgary Northstars 3

TERRY’S OT MARKER MAKES IT THREE WINS IN THREE DAYS FOR RED

CALGARY, Alta. – It was a slow start but stunning finish Thursday in Red’s game against the Midget AAA Calgary Northstars.

After suffering from some penalty trouble in the first, and facing a 2-0 deficit going into intermission as a result, Red came back with a vengeance in the second, carrying the momentum of that three-goal middle frame into a strong third and – eventually – an overtime goal from Kelly Terry (Whitby, Ont./University of Minnesota, WCHA) for the 4-3 win.

It’s the third straight victory, in as many days, for Red at this week’s Canada’s National Women’s Team September Camp/Fall Festival taking place at the WinSport Canada Athletic & Ice Complex, home arena for Hockey Canada.

It would be veteran Jayna Hefford (Kingston, Ont./Brampton, Ont.) to turn that first period slump around early in the second, sending the puck into the top shelf at 6:40 in the second on a pass from Laura Fortino (Hamilton, Ont./Cornell University, ECAC). Hefford found the back of the Northstars net again just over three minutes later, accepting the puck from Terry and Marie-Philip Poulin (Beauceville, Que./Boston University, HE) before finding an open spot on the right side and putting it past a sprawling goaltender.

Brianne Jenner broke the tie at 11:39 in the period, with help from Vicki Bendus (Wasaga Beach, Ont./Brampton, CWHL), giving Red a brief 3-2 lead, but the  Northstars managed to even it out again at 14:08 to make it 3-3 by the end of the middle frame. A scoreless third period sent the game into overtime, but it only a couple of minutes and one Northstars penalty to give Terry the opportunity to send the puck soaring into the back of the net, earn her first goal at a National Women’s Team camp and cap off Red’s exciting 4-3 win.

Red takes a rest Friday before heading back to the rink Saturday for a fourth and final game at this year’s Canada’s National Women’s Team September Camp/Fall Festival, an intrasquad match-up against White. The last time these two squads faced off, Red edged White 2-1. The puck drops on Rink A at WinSport Canada this Saturday.
