WARD SCORES WINNER, RED GETS FIRST WIN AT WOMEN’S CAMP

CALGARY, Alta. – Catherine Ward (Montreal, Que./Montreal, CWHL) scored the winner with just over eight minutes to go, helping Red erase a late deficit and earn a 4-3 win over White in the first game of Canada’s National Women’s Team September Camp/Fall Festival on Wednesday night.

Ward’s point shot went off the crossbar and in behind White netminder Geneviève Lacasse (Kingston, Ont./Providence College, HE) to put White ahead to stay, capping off a rollercoaster 60 minutes of hockey.

Hayley Wickenheiser (Shaunavon, Sask./University of Calgary, CWUAA) scored twice for Red, including the game-tying goal 1:42 before Ward’s winner. Wickenheiser – Canada’s all-time leading scorer in international play – tied the game just 69 seconds after Meghan Agosta (Ruthven, Ont./Montreal, CWHL) had given White its first lead since 1-0.

Jenelle Kohanchuk (Winnipeg, Man./Boston University, HE) scored the other goal for Red, while Jayna Hefford (Kingston, Ont./Brampton, CWHL) and Haley Irwin (Thunder Bay, Ont./University of Minnesota Duluth, WCHA) joined Agosta on the scoresheet for White.

Emmanuelle Blais (Montreal, Que./Montreal, CWHL) finished with three assists for Red.

White led 1-0 before Red scored the game’s next two goals to take its first lead. Irwin tied the game for White late in the second period and Agosta put White ahead before Red’s comeback.

Despite winning by just a single goal Red dominated the shot clock, outshooting White 35-15. Lacasse finished with 31 saves for White, while her Red counterpart, Christina Kessler (Mississauga, Ont./Burlington, CWHL), picked up the win with a 12-save performance.

Both teams are on the ice at Father David Bauer Olympic Arena on Thursday, both against Calgary-area Midget AAA competition – Red faces the Calgary Northstars in the early game (5 p.m. MT), while White takes on the Calgary Royals in the nightcap (8:15 p.m. MT).
