2009-10 National Women's Team

Calgary Royals 2 - Canada 3

WAKEFIELD’S PAIR SINKS ROYALS

CALGARY, Alta. – Jennifer Wakefield (Pickering, Ont.) scored her second goal of the game while falling to the ice during a mad goal-mouth scramble early in the third period, helping Canada’s National Women’s Team to a 3-2 win over the Calgary Royals on Saturday afternoon.

The win gave Canada a perfect 3-0 round-robin record at the Icebreaker Tournament, and set up a rematch between the Canadians and the Royals in Sunday’s championship game (3:30 p.m. MT).

A fast-paced and evenly-matched first period yielded no goals but several quality chances for both teams. On a power play, Shannon Szabados (Edmonton, Alta.) stopped the Royals’ Logan Maddin on a quick shot in front. Moments later, it was Calgary goaltender James D’Andrea’s chance to shine, stopping Jayna Hefford’s (Kingston, Ont.) effort after a great cross-ice pass from Sarah Vaillancourt (Sherbrooke, Que.).

The Royals finally opened the scoring early in the middle frame, as Brad Buckingham’s centering pass bounced in off a hard-charging Trent Geiger. Canada pressed on and actually took the play to the Royals for the next few minutes, with Meghan Agosta (Ruthven, Ont.) coming up just short on a breakaway at the midway point of the period.

But D’Andrea couldn’t keep the Canadians at bay much longer, and it was Catherine Ward (Montreal, Que.) intercepting a clearing attempt and sending a wrist shot through a crowd at the net. The rebound came out to Wakefield, who sent a backhand past D’Andrea.

Canada took a 2-1 lead less than three minutes later, as Rebecca Johnston (Sudbury, Ont.) won a battle along the boards behind the net, stepped in front and found the corner for her third goal in two games, but the Royals needed just 3:19 to even the score at 2-2 as Gui Glasspoole pushed his own rebound past Szabados.

Wakefield scored the winning goal at the 2:36 mark of the final period, managing to slide the puck through a crowd and past D’Andrea while getting knocked over in front of the net.

The Royals pressed in the final moments, but managed only four shots on net the final frame.

In addition to Sunday’s championship game, the Calgary Flames and UFA Bisons will face off at 12:30 p.m. MT in the third-place game. Tickets for all tournament games can be purchased at the door.
