Canada 5 - Calgary Flames 2

JOHNSTON SCORES PAIR AS CANADA HEADS INTO 4 NATIONS ON HIGH

CALGARY, Alta. – With a cross-Atlantic flight less than 24 hours away, Canada’s National Women’s Team made sure it entered the 2009 4 Nations Cup on a winning note, earning a 5-2 win over the Calgary Flames in NWT Midget Series action on Tuesday night.

Rebecca Johnston (Sudbury, Ont.) led the offensive charge for the Canadians, scoring twice, while Jayna Hefford (Kingston, Ont.), Jennifer Wakefield (Pickering, Ont.) and Sarah Vaillancourt (Sherbrooke, Que.) each found the back of the net once.

Coming off a 6-0 loss to the UFA Bisons in a Midget Series contest last Thursday, it took Canada just 54 seconds to ensure it would not suffer back-to-back shutout losses, as Hefford surprised Calgary goaltender Cole Cheveldave with a wraparound in the game’s first minute.

The goal continued a hot streak for Hefford at Father David Bauer Olympic Arena – the veteran forward had three goals, including the overtime winner, and an assist in Canada’s 4-3 win over the Calgary Buffaloes on Oct. 13.

Hard work led to Canada’s second goal – Cherie Piper (Scarborough, Ont.) dug the puck out of the corner and threw it in front to Johnston, who made no mistake for a two-goal advantage after 20 minutes.

The lead became three after Wakefield’s shot from the slot went up and over Cheveldave less than three minutes into period two, but the Flames got that one less than a minute later off the stick of Carter Page.

Calgary pushed to cut into the Canadian even more through much of the second period, but netminder Kim St-Pierre (Châteauguay, Que.) was up to the challenge, keeping the Flames at bay.

Vaillancourt restored Canada’s three-goal lead at the 16:33 mark of the middle frame, picking off an errant pass and showing a great set of hands before sliding the puck through Cheveldave’s five-hole, and Johnston made it 5-1 before the end of the period, knocking home a Meghan Mikkelson (St. Albert, Alta.) rebound on the power play.

Brandon Long rounded out the scoring very late in the third for the Flames, who entered the game leading the AMHL’s Chrysler Division with a 4-1-3 record.

Canada departs Wednesday morning for Sweden, where it will train in preparation for the 2009 4 Nations Cup. The Canadians look to regain their 4 Nations gold beginning Nov. 3 against Sweden in Vierumaki, Finland.
