NWT REBOUNDS WITH WIN OVER MAPLE LEAF ATHLETIC CLUB

EDMONTON, Alta. – Two late goals in the second period helped Canada’s National Women’s Team to a 5-2 win over Edmonton’s Maple Leaf Athletic Club on Friday night in Canada’s NWT Midget Series road finale.

Jayna Hefford (Kingston, Ont.) and Marie-Philip Poulin (Beauceville, Que.) scored 16 seconds apart late in the middle frame to give Canada a 3-2 lead heading into the third period, finishing off a three-goal second period and a comeback from an early 2-0 deficit.

Canada would add two goals in the third period to round out the scoring.

The Leafs came out firing in the first period and scored the lone two goals of the opening 20 minutes. Shannon Szabados (Edmonton, Alta.), who earned the win in Canada’s net, was forced to make 17 saves in the opening frame. She finished with 33 saves.

Haley Irwin (Thunder Bay, Ont.) started Canada’s scoring surge in the second period with a goal at the 11:52 mark.

Poulin would add her second of the game in the third period on a power play and Caroline Ouellette (Montreal, Que.) would finish the scoring in the dying minutes on a great play started by Meghan Agosta (Ruthven, Ont.).

Canada’s National Women’s Team ended its three-game swing through northern Alberta with a 1-2 mark and now heads home to Calgary, where it will wrap up the Midget Series with a pair of games next week.

Canada is 15-9 in the Midget Series, including a 10-8 record away from home.
