2009-10 National Women's Team

Canada 2 - Lloydminster 5

CANADA CAN’T CAPITALIZE ON CHANCES IN LOSS TO LLOYDMINSTER

LLOYDMINSTER, ALTA. – Canada’s National Women’s Team outshot and out-chanced its opponent on Thursday night, only to end up on the wrong end of the final score.

Canada dropped a 5-2 decision to the host Lloydminster Bobcats, in front of a sellout crowd of 1,752 at the Centennial Civic Centre in Canada’s Border City.

Lloydminster scored two goals in 22 seconds midway through the first period and led 3-0 at one point in the first. Sarah Vaillancourt (Sherbrooke, Que.) scored at the 15:49 mark of the first to cut Canada’s deficit to two goals.

The Bobcats would score the lone goal of the second to take a 4-1 lead into the final frame.

But Canada, which lost 5-3 to Fort Saskatchewan on Tuesday night in a similar game, didn’t quit. Catherine Ward (Montreal, Que.) finished a great play set up by Vaillancourt and Rebecca Johnston (Sudbury, Ont.) at the 12:24 mark of the third to make it 4-2. And, just as it did two nights earlier, Canada’s women’s team took it to its opponents from there to try and claw back.

But Lloydminster showed why it is one of the top teams in the Alberta Midget Hockey League, holding off Canada’s attack.

Kim St-Pierre (Chateauguay, Que.) made 24 saves in Canada’s net and took the loss. Canada returns to the ice on Friday night, when it will complete a three-game swing through northern Alberta with a game against the Edmonton Maple Leafs in Alberta’s capital.

Friday’s game will be the third-last in the Alberta Midget Series. Canada will return to Calgary for two games next week to complete the series. Follow all of the action at www.hockeycanada.ca.
