2009-10 National Women's Team

Canada 3 - Fort Saskatchewan 5

LATE FLURRY NOTE ENOUGH AS CANADA FALLS TO RANGERS

FORT SASKATCHEWAN, Alta. – On a night that featured 82 shots on goal, it was fitting that it was a goaltender that made the difference on Tuesday night.

Fort Saskatchewan netminder Taylor Davie faced 23 shots in the third period – many of which were prime scoring chances – and made 22 stops, leading his Rangers to a 5-3 win over Canada’s National Women’s Team on Tuesday night.

The loss dropped Canada to 14-8 in the NWT Midget Series, with four games left on the schedule before Canada departs for Vancouver and the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

The teams went into the third period tied at 2-2, with Haley Irwin (Thunder Bay, Ont.) scoring for Canada in the first and Marie-Philip Poulin (Beauceville, Que.) netting Canada’s second goal in the middle frame.

Fort Saskatchewan got goals from Cody Antos and Bryce Sauers during the first 40 minutes and then took a 4-2 lead in the third on goals by Jordan Baillie and Travis Geislinger. But Rebecca Johnston (Sudbury, Ont.) would get her team right back in the game with a power-play goal at 12:53 of the third.

From there, Canada’s National Women’s Team didn’t let up in trying to score the equalizer. Davie was forced to make several fantastic saves to keep his team in the lead and was only able to catch his breath when Rangers forward Baillie added his second of the game into an empty net. Canada outshot Fort Saskatchewan 48-34.

Canada will be off on Wednesday but returns to action on Thursday night in Lloydminster, when the women face the Bobcats.
