BALANCED SCORING LEADS CANADA TO VICTORY OVER CANADIANS

EDMONTON, ALTA. – Three goals in each of the first and second periods propelled Canada’s National Women’s Team to an 8-4 win over the Edmonton CAC Canadians in Midget Series action on Wednesday night.

Hayley Wickenheiser (Shaunavon, Sask.) led the way with a pair of goals, with singles being added by Jayna Hefford (Kingston, Ont.), Rebecca Johnston (Sudbury, Ont.), Sarah Vaillancourt (Sherbrooke, Que.), Marie-Philip Poulin (Beauceville, Que.), Tessa Bonhomme and Gina Kingsbury (Rouyn-Noranda, Que.).

Edmonton opened the scoring at the 3:36 mark of the first period when Stephen Zipp’s shot beat Canada goaltender Shannon Szabados (Edmonton, Alta.). But Canada would score three unanswered goals, with Wickenheiser starting the scoring with a breakaway goal, and Hefford and Poulin also getting in on the act. Those three goals were scored in less than three minutes. Edmonton would add its second goal and trail by one heading into the second period.

Johnston, Vaillancourt and Wickenheiser, with her second, added goals in the middle frame and Canada led 6-3 heading into the final 20 minutes.

Kingsbury and Bonhomme finished the scoring for Canada.

The win improves Canada’s record against Midget AAA boys teams to 18-7 this season. Canada’s National Women’s Team heads back to Calgary before embarking on its second swing through northern Alberta in as many weeks on Tuesday. Canada will face Fort Saskatchewan, Lloydminster and Edmonton Maple Leafs of the Alberta Midget Hockey League between January 18 and 22.
