LATE SPECIAL TEAMS PUSH HELPS NATIONAL WOMEN’S TEAM TO WIN

CALGARY, Alta. – It was close, but it was not to be for Canada’s National Women’s Under-22 Team on Monday night.

Leading 3-2 with seven minutes to go, the U22 team allowed a power play goal and a shorthanded marker in the dying minutes, allowing the National Women’s Team to escape with a 4-3 victory in the first game of the three-game series between the teams.
Marie-Philip Poulin (Beauceville, Que.) and Meghan Agosta (Ruthven, Ont.) did the damage late for the national team, as Agosta helped set up Poulin for the game-tying goal on a two-man advantage at 13:06 before Poulin returned the favour on the game-winner with 66 seconds remaining.

Despite playing its first competitive game as a team, the U22 side came out with the momentum in the opening 20 minutes, drawing three penalties and outshooting the national team 12-5, but the game was scoreless after one.

Lauriane Rougeau (Beaconsfield, Que.) finally converted a U22 power play early in the second period, stepping in from the blueline and snapping a shot past goaltender Kim St-Pierre (Châteauguay, Que.) for a 1-0 lead.

But NWT veterans Caroline Ouellette (Montreal, Que.) and Gillian Apps (Unionville, Ont.) made sure the lead did not last, scoring 2:33 apart to put the national side ahead 2-1 and ensuring an unhappy send-off for U22 netminder Laura Hosier (Sharon, Ont.), who was replaced by Christina Kessler (Mississauga, Ont.) after Apps’ goal.

Trailing for the first time, the under-22 team went back to work on the power play, getting goals from Karell Emard (Richelieu, Que.) and Jessica Wong (Baddeck, N.S.) to take a 3-2 lead to the dressing room.

Determined not to suffer its first loss of the year, the national team came out flying to start period three and earned a full two-minute man advantage when Emard and Jesse Scanzano (Dollard des Ormeaux, Que.) took minor penalties with eight minutes to go.

Poulin took advantage of the 5-on-3, blasting a point shot by Kessler to draw the national team even.

Younger than all but two players in the game, the 18-year-old wasn’t satisfied with just tying the game, as she outraced a U22 defender to the puck and fed Agosta, who poked the game-winning goal past Kessler with just 1:06 remaining on the clock.

The national team outshot the U22 side 13-3 in the third period and 31-25 overall.

The two teams meet again on Tuesday (7 p.m. MT) before wrapping up the series Thursday night (7 p.m. MT). Both games are at Father David Bauer Olympic Arena.
