2008-09 National Women's Team

GAME SUMMARY

Canada White 5 - Calgary AAA Flames 1

AGOSTA’S PAIR LEADS TEAM WHITE TO TOURNAMENT TITLE

The kids are alright.

Team Canada White exploded for three third-period goals, to turn a close game into a comfortable win, as it defeated the Midget AAA Calgary Flames 5-1 in the final game of the National Women’s Team September evaluation camp.

Team White, made up mostly of newcomers to the National Women’s Team program, was led by Meghan Agosta (Ruthven, ON/Mercyhurst, CHA), who had two goals and two assists for a four-point game. Agosta assisted on the first two White goals of the game. In the first period, Haley Irwin (Thunder Bay, ON/University of Minnesota-Duluth, WCHA) jammed in a rebound to give White a 1-0 lead, which it would carry into the second.

The Flames got into penalty trouble in the second period and Canada White made them pay. At 10:14, Marie-Philip Poulin (Beauceville, QC/Dawson College, CEGEP) scored the prettiest goal of the game when she completed a tic-tac-toe play to make it 2-0. Agosta started the play, giving the puck to Vicki Bendus (Wasaga Beach, ON/Mercyhurst, CHA), who spotted an open Poulin at the side of the net. The Flames answered back at 15:38, as Zack Rassell scored what would be Calgary’s lone goal.

That set the stage for an exciting third period, as Canada White never let the foot off the gas pedal.

Agosta scored back-to-back goals, at the 38-second mark and at 3:24. Caroline Ouellette (Montreal, QC/Montreal, CWHL), the veteran on this team, finished the scoring when she took a nice feed from Emmanuelle Blais (Montreal, QC/University of Minnesota-Duluth, WCHA) and wired a shot past Calgary netminder Alexander Caravaggio.

The evaluation camp was the first event of the 2008-09 season for the National Women’s Team program. Forty-three players took to the ice for Teams Red and White. Later this month, Hockey Canada will announce which players will move on to compete at future events on the 2008-09 calendar.
