Team White 1 - Calgary AAA Flames 5

SPECIAL TEAMS LEAD Flames TO WIN OVER WHITE

Taking to the ice just 13 hours after its dramatic 13-round shootout win over Canada Red on Friday night, Canada White could not keep up the momentum on Saturday, dropping a 5-1 decision to the Calgary Flames Midget AAA boys’ team at the National Women’s Team evaluation camp in Calgary.

Courtney Birchard scored the lone goal for Canada White, who was even 1-1 with the Flames after 20 minutes before giving up four unanswered goals, three of them coming on special teams.

After killing off an early two-man advantage, Canada White found itself in a 1-0 hole just past the midway point of the opening period as Brendon MacDonald was on the doorstep to put a rebound past goaltender Laura Hosier.

Undaunted, Birchard tied the game for Canada White just 4:02 later, taking a perfect cross-crease feed from Marie-Philip Poulin and directing her backhand over the shoulder of Flames netminder Cole Chelveldave.

Canada White got into penalty trouble in the second period, handing the Flames three of the first four powerplays of the frame, but it was Calgary’s penalty killing that struck for the go-ahead goal, that coming off the stick of Carter Page, who blasted a shot off the wing past Hosier.

Danny Gayle gave the Flames a 3-1 lead with a powerplay goal late in the second period, and Zack Rassell – on the powerplay – and Mike Forsyth rounded out the scoring in the third period as Calgary wrapped up a spot in Sunday’s final game.

The Flames held a 23-19 advantage in shots on goal.

Hosier finished with 18 saves between the pipes for Canada White, which suffered its first loss of the camp.

Regardless of the outcome of Saturday’s game between Canada Red and the UFA Bisons, Canada White and Calgary will meet again on Sunday afternoon (2 p.m. MDT) in the camp’s final game.
