2008-09 National Women's Team

Team Red 4 - UFA AAA Bisons 2

WICKENHEISER’S THREE POINTS LEAD RED TO FIRST VICTORY

It may have taken a little longer than it expected, but Canada Red is into the win column at the National Women’s Team evaluation camp in Calgary.

Hayley Wickenheiser scored twice and added an assist as Canada Red knocked off the UFA Bisons Midget AAA boys’ team 4-2 on Saturday afternoon in Calgary, the round-robin finale for both.

The Canada Red win means the two teams will meet again on Sunday afternoon (11 a.m. MDT) in the camp’s third-place game, while Canada White and the Calgary Flames, the other Calgary-area Midget AAA team at the camp, will meet in the final game (2 p.m. MDT).

Coming off a dramatic 3-2 shootout loss to Canada White on Friday night – three times it was just one save away from victory in the 13-round marathon – Canada Red got on the board just over eight minutes after the opening face-off, as Cathy Chartrand took a pass from Sabrina Harbec and beat an out-of-position Brayden Hopfe.

Canada Red’s powerplay went to work just minutes later and it was Jayna Hefford who picked up the goal on the man advantage, redirecting a Carla MacLeod point shot past Hopfe.

The veteran combination of Wickenheiser and Hefford combined for Wickenheiser’s first goal of the game late in the second period, and Canada’s all-time leading scorer hit the scoresheet again, this time unassisted, just 69 seconds into the second period for a four-goal lead, spelling the end of the night for Hopfe, who was replaced by George Merik.

Merik shut the door the rest of the way, turning aside all 13 shots he faced, but the Bisons could only muster a pair of goals, a beautiful spinning backhand in the slot from Steven Phee at the 13:33 of the second period on a UFA powerplay, and a rocket off the stick of Ty Rattie with just under five minutes to go.

Kim St-Pierre turned aside 26 of the 28 shots she faced in picking up the victory.
