Team Red 2 - Calgary AAA CGYmes 4

THIRD-PERIOD COMEBACK LEADS CGYMES OVER CANADA RED

Hayley Wickenheiser (Shaunavon, SK/Calgary, WWHL) scored once and added an assist in a two-goal first period, but that would be all the offense Canada Red could muster as it dropped a 4-2 decision to the Calgary CGYmes Midget AAA boys team on Thursday night at the National Women’s Team evaluation camp in Calgary.

Canada Red opened the scoring just 7:04 after the opening face-off, as Delaney Collins (Pilot Mound, MB/Calgary, WWHL) snuck in from her spot on the blueline and buried the rebound of a Wickenheiser shot past CGYmes goaltender Cole Cheveldave.

Wickenheiser made it 2-0 late in the period, taking a pass from Gillian Apps (Unionville, ON/Brampton, CWHL) and firing a laser over the glove hand of Cheveldave.

Canada Red controlled the play in the opening 20 minutes, outshooting the CGYmes 12-2, but Calgary turned it on in the second period, firing 10 shots at Red goaltender Charline Labonté (Boisbriand, QC/McGill University, CIS) while Canada Red could muster only three on Cheveldave.

The CGYmes picked up the lone goal of the second period, as Brendon MacDonald circled the net before snapping a wrist shot to the short side on Labonté to cut the Canada Red lead to 2-1 heading to the second intermission.

Calgary’s momentum continued into the third period, and they pulled even just 24 seconds into the frame on a goal from Mike Forsyth, who stepped into the Canada Red zone and fired a shot that snuck through Labonté for a shorthanded marker.

With the CGYmes continuing to pressure the Canada Red defense, they took their first lead just past the midway point of the period as Colten Meaden picked up a loose puck in the slot and beat Labonté through the legs.

Canada Red had a glorious opportunity to tie the game with just minutes to go, as they picked up a late powerplay, but Cheveldave stood tall during the two-minute man advantage, highlighted by a ‘have-to-see-it-to-believe-it’ glove save off Jayna Hefford (Kingston, ON/Brampton, CWHL).

Luke Carson rounded out the scoring with just nine seconds to go, scoring into an empty net.

Canada Red returns to the ice at Father David Bauer Olympic Arena on Friday night when they face Canada White at 8 p.m. MDT, while the CGYmes will face the other Midget AAA at the camp, the UFA Bisons, at 4:30 p.m. MDT.
