SZABADOS ROBS THEM BLIND, CANADA BEATS MONCTON FLYERS

MONCTON, NB – It’s a save New Brunswick hockey fans will be talking about for awhile.
Shannon Szabados (Edmonton, AB/Grant MacEwan, ACAC men’s) made a ‘you-can’t-be-serious’ save late in the second period, helping Canada’s National Women’s Team beat the Moncton Flyers Midget AAA boys team 2-0 on Sunday night.

The save came with 1.1 seconds left in the second period and it kept the game scoreless. With the clock ticking down, the Flyers’ Gino Goguen found himself on a 2-on-0 with linemate Allain Saulnier. Goguen fed the puck to Saulnier, who one-timed a shot at the right-hand corner. Out of nowhere came the glove hand of Szabados, who caught the puck and brought a large crowd to its feet. Following the ensuing faceoff, the Moncton crowd gave Szabados a standing ovation for the save.

Szabados teamed up with Laura Hosier (Sharon, ON/Brampton, CWHL) to make 37 saves for the shutout. Hosier started the game and made some big saves early, keeping Canada in the game. Team Canada was out shot 14-6 in the first period.
The game was scoreless through two periods, but there was no lack of scoring chances on either side.

Canada opened the scoring on a 5-on-3 powerplay at the four-minute mark of the third period. Cherie Piper (Scarborough, ON/Calgary, WWHL) one-timed a pass from Jennifer Botterill (Winnipeg, MB/Mississauga, CWHL), a play started by Meaghan Mikkelson (St. Albert, AB/Edmonton, WWHL).

Then, just 1:33 later, Jayna Hefford (Kingston, ON/Brampton, CWHL) scored to make it 2-0. Gina Kingsbury (Rouyn-Noranda, QC/Calgary, WWHL) and Delaney Collins (Pilot Mound, MB/Calgary, WWHL) assisted on the goal.

Canada is now 2-1 after three games during its October training camp. The National Women’s Team will conclude its camp on Monday with a rematch against the Moncton Flyers. The game will be played at 2 p.m. AST at the Kay Arena.
