CANADA COMES UP JUST SHORT IN SHOOTOUT LOSS TO U.S. AT 4 NATIONS CUP

Lake Placid, NY – Inches. That is all that separated Canada from another 4 Nations Cup title on Sunday afternoon. Caroline Ouellette and Sarah Vaillancourt both hit posts in the shootout, but the U.S. survived to capture a 3-2 seven round shootout win on a goal by Erica McKenzie at the 2008 4 Nations Cup.

The U.S. opened the scoring at 12:40 of the opening period on a power play. Natalie Darwitz walked in from the point and beat Charline Labonté (Boisbriand, QC/ McGill, CIS) with a quick wrist shot.

Canada evened the score later in the first, on another U.S. power play. Jayna Hefford (Kingston, ON/ Brampton, CWHL) knocked the puck away from a U.S. player at Canada’s blue line, and went in on a breakaway, tucking a backhand past U.S. netminder Jessie Vetter.

Canada jumped into the lead in the second, as Caroline Ouellette (Montreal, QC/Montreal, CWHL) used Jennifer Botterill as a decoy on a two-on-one rush, then fired a hard wrist shot past Vetter. The Canadian lead would not survive the period. A Canadian turnover at the blue line gave U.S. veteran Julie Chu a clear lane to the net, and she beat Labonté, making the score 2-2 through forty minutes of play.

There was no scoring during the third period, sending the two long-time rivals into overtime. The best chance in overtime came during a Canadian power play. A hard Ouellette wrist shot snuck through Vetter’s pads and trickled to the goal line. Ouellette and linemate Hefford were convinced they had seen the puck cross the goal line, but without video replay, the referee and goal judge didn’t see it the same way and the overtime ended scoreless.

The winning team was decided in a shootout that went all of seven rounds, with 14 different shooters being called upon. Canada’s Ouellette and Sarah Vaillancourt both hit posts in the shootout but neither side could find the net through six rounds of shooters. Erica McKenzie of the U.S. finally managed a goal in that seventh and final round, and Meghan Agosta was unable to match her, giving the U.S. a hardfought 3-2 shootout win to claim the 2008 4 Nations Cup.
