GAME SUMMARY

Canada 1 - CHA Midget AAA 2

CANADA COMES UP SHORT AGAINST CHATEAUGUAY

Montreal, QC – Despite a strong final period and coming inches from tying the game in the dying seconds, Canada’s National Women’s Team finished on the short end of a 2-1 score to the Châteauguay Patriotes. Gillian Apps scored Canada’s only goal.

Patrick Langlois opened the scoring for Châteauguay in the opening frame, sent in alone by the Patriotes’ top scorer Maximilien Le Sieur. Langlois beat Châteauguay native Kim St-Pierre to give the midget AAA squad an early lead at 3:38.

St-Pierre made a point black save mid-way through the first, and her teammates responded with the tying goal. Caroline Ouellette (Montreal, QC/ Montreal, CWHL) left her post on defence and powered herself past a Patriotes’ defenceman, sending a centering pass to Gillian Apps (Unionville, ON/ Mississauga, CWHL) who was crashing to the net, and Apps slammed the puck past the helpless Châteauguay goaltender Patrick Spano.

The middle frame looked like it was going to be scoreless, with Châteauguay carrying most of the play. Their persistence paid off at 18:44, as a turnover led to a goal by Le Sieur. His quick wrist shot beat Charline Labonté (Boisbriand, QC/ McGill, CIS) on the glove side. At the same time, Éric Bourdon came in to replace Châteauguay starter Spano.

Canada had more chances in the third and final period, but could not find the mark. The best chance for Canada may have come on a power play, when Jayna Hefford (Kingston, ON/Brampton, CWHL) was left alone to one side of the net, but her quick shot was kicked aside by Bourdon. Then again, in the final moments, a loose puck bounced over Rebecca Johnston’s stick as she stood next to a wide open net.

Canada’s National Women’s Team will leave for Lake Placid and the 4 Nations Cup on Sunday morning. Canada opens the 2008 4 Nations Cup on Tuesday, November 4th against Finland (game time: 1:00 pm EST).
