TEAM WHITE SPLIT SQUAD 3 ON 3 GAME GOES TO SHOOTOUT

Kenora, ON – As the team that finished in third place in the National Women’s Team Fall Festival, Team A (White) played in a consolation game on Friday evening, just prior to the Championship Game. The team was split into two squads for a 3 on 3 game with some special rules, including two 25-minute running time periods and penalty shots for all penalties. Players charged with penalties return to their own benches and miss one shift. The player fouled on the infraction is noted and gets a penalty shot at the end of the period. The Red split squad, on a shootout goal by Cheryl Pounder, registered a 6-5 win over the White split squad.

Delaney Collins (Pilot Mount, MB), Vicky Sunohara (Scarborough, ON) and Ashley Riggs (Pickering, ON) scored for the Red split squad while Heather Logan (Napanee, ON) replied for White.

There were three penalty shots awarded at the end of the period, but no goals were scored. Robyn Rittmaster (Halifax, NS) made two saves for the White split squad and Charline Labonté made one for the Red split squad.

Team White came back to tie the game briefly at 3-3, on goals by Cherie Piper (Scarborough, ON) and Tessa Bonhomme (Sudbury, ON). However, Team Red staked itself to another two goal lead on goals by Collins, her second, of the game and Jennifer Botterill (Winnipeg, MB).

No leads are safe in 3 on 3 hockey, and such was the case on this night. The White split squad roared back with two late goals to make it a 5-5 tie through regulation. Rebecca Johnston (Sudbury, ON) and Jesse Scanzano (Montreal, QC) registered the two late goals.

It took one penalty shot and six rounds of shootout to determine the winning side, with two-time Olympian defenceman Cheryl Pounder (Mississauga, ON) providing the deciding goal to give the Red split squad at 6-5 victory. Both goalies were busy, with Charline Labonté making 30 saves for the Red site, and Robyn Rittmaster making 27 stops for the Whites.

The Championship Game, with Team C (Red) and Team B (Black) facing off, is scheduled to start at 8:30 pm (Central Time) at the Kenora Recreational Centre. Tickets are expected to be at a premium, where the evening 5 on 5 games have averaged over 850 fans.
