Canada 1 - Calgary AAA Midget Royals 1

Tournament vs. AAA Midgets
Round Robin
Saturday, September 24, 2005
Calgary, AB
Father David Bauer Arena

Team Canada was looking to register their first win of the tournament on Saturday night as they faced another winless team in the Calgary Royals.

Canada found themselves in penalty trouble mid-way through the first as Cheryl Pounder went off for high sticking. The Royals had some pressure during the power-play but could not convert which seemed to spark Canada. With the intensity rising, the Canadians controlled the play and showed their poise with some nice passing and had several scoring opportunities but came up empty handed. With less than five minutes remaining Gina Kingsbury was called for holding the stick putting her team down a man but once again Canada’s penalty kill held on. Sami Jo Small who started her first game of the tourney was solid in net turning aside all 6 shots she faced. It was a scoreless game going into the second.

The Royals struck first in the second as Zach Johnson lobbed a pass that enabled Thomas Durnie to break in alone on Sami Jo Small and he made no mistake beating her stick side. Team Canada replied shortly after as Gina Kinsgbury centered a pass that was broken up but amidst the flurry of activity in front of the net, no one picked up the lose puck and Becky Kellar took full advantage racing in from the point and sliding it past Scott Ismond.

The second half of the period featured some rough play and both teams had their opportunities on the man advantage but could not convert as both goaltenders made some key saves. At the end of two, the score was tied at one.

The third period featured back and forth play as each team were vying for the go ahead goal.  With just under nine minutes remaining in the third, Team Canada went on the man advantage. However, the power-play proved to be ineffective as they managed to register but one shot. Then with just over three minutes left, Canada had another opportunity on the power-play but failed to convert. As the buzzer sounded to end the game, both the game finished tied 1-1.  Both teams will face-off again tomorrow morning in the third place game at 10:00am.
