Canada 12 - Slovakia 1

CANADA IMPRESSIVE IN LOPSIDED PRE-HLINKA WIN OVER SLOVAKIA

DAVID BRIEN

TRNAVA, Slovakia – Playing in its lone pre-tournament game prior to the U18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup, Canada’s National Men's Summer Under-18 Team flexed its offensive muscle in a 12-1 win over Slovakia on Saturday.

Kale Clague (Lloydminster, Alta./Brandon, WHL) had an impressive outing, scoring the game’s first two goals before finishing off his hat trick in the final minute.

Sam Steel (Sherwood Park, Alta./Regina, WHL) found the back of the net twice, and Nolan Patrick (Winnipeg, Man./Brandon, WHL), Tyson Jost (Kelowna, B.C./Penticton, BCHL) and Tyler Benson (Edmonton, Alta./Vancouver, WHL) each had a goal and two assists.

In all, 15 of the 18 Canadian skaters put their name on the scoresheet.

Canada scored three first-period goals, before adding four and five, respectively, in the final two frames.

Carter Hart (Sherwood Park, Alta./Everett, WHL) got the nod to start in the Canadian goal, holding the Slovaks without a goal before he was replaced midway through the second period by Dylan Wells (St. Catharines, Ont./Peterborough, OHL) to allow both Canadian goaltenders to see action before the tournament.

Canada will open the U18 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup on Monday when it faces the host Czech Republic in a preliminary round match-up (1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. PT).
