KYROU HAS GOAL AND ASSIST, CANADA BEATS SLOVAKIA IN U18 WORLDS WARM-UP

JASON LA ROSE

ZUG, Switzerland – Jordan Kyrou (Toronto, Ont./Sarnia, OHL) paced the offence with a goal and an assist, and Canada’s National Men’s Under-18 Team opened its pre-tournament schedule with a 5-0 win over Slovakia on Monday.

The game was the first of two for Canada before it begins the 2015 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship against Latvia on Thursday. It will also face Germany on Tuesday (12:30 p.m. ET/9:30 a.m. PT).

Kyrou was joined by Nicolas Roy (Amos, Que./Chicoutimi, QMJHL), Matthew Spencer (Oakville, Ont./Peterborough, OHL), Anthony Beauvillier (Sorel, Que./Shawinigan, QMJHL) and Pierre-Luc Dubois (Ste-Agathe-des-Monts, Que./Cape Breton, QMJHL) as goal scorers for the Canadians, who scored three times on the power play.

Zach Sawchenko (Calgary, Alta./Moose Jaw, WHL) earned the shutout in the Canadian goal, stopping all 15 shots he faced.

Roy got the scoring started just seconds past the midway point of the opening period with an unassisted effort, the lone goal in a first period that saw Canada outshoot Slovakia 14-4.

Spencer doubled the lead at 6:35 of the second, and a pair of power-play goals – from Beauvillier and Dubois just 94 seconds apart late in the middle frame – sent Canada to the dressing room up 4-0 after 40 minutes.

Kyrou capped the scoring nine minutes into a quiet third period.

The Canadians controlled the play for much of the game, finishing with a 43-15 advantage in shots on goal, and were perfect on the penalty kill, holding the Slovaks goalless in three power play opportunities.
