Intersquad Game #02

FIVE-GOAL OUTBURST
HELPS WHITE TO 7-5 VICTORY OVER RED

One night after scoring just four times on 26 shots, Team White needed just 18 minutes to equal that offensive output on Monday, finding the back of the net five times on 19 shots in the opening period of their 7-5 win over Team Red at the National Men’s Summer Under-18 Team selection camp in Calgary.

White’s win evens the three-game series at a game apiece, with the third and deciding game set for Tuesday night at 6:00 p.m. MT at Father David Bauer Olympic Arena.

Just as they did a night earlier, Team White opened the scoring, with Kyle St. Denis (Trail, BC/ Vernon, BCHL) doing the honours just shy of the five-minute mark of the opening period, beating Team Red goaltender Jeff Bosch (Martensville, SK/ Saskatoon Blazers, Midget AAA) on a penalty shot.

As it is in all three games, any penalties called will not result in two minutes in the penalty box for the offending player, they will result in a penalty shot for the affected player.

It was another penalty shot goal for Team White just under five minutes later, this time it was Phillipe Cornet (Val d’Or, QC/ Rimouski, QMJHL) beating Bosch for a 2-0 lead.

It took just five more minutes for the lead to become three, as Jared Cowen (Allan, SK/ Spokane, WHL) fed Cody Hodgson (Markham, ON/ Brampton, OHL) from behind the net for Hodgson’s first goal of the two games.

Each team received a four-minute powerplay at the end of each of the first two periods – Team White at the end of the first period, Team Red at the end of the second – and Team White took advantage of their time with the man advantage, scoring twice.

James Wright (Saskatoon, SK/ Vancouver, WHL) got the first, taking a pass in the slot from Michael Del Zotto (Stouffville, ON/ Oshawa, OHL) and outwaiting Bosch for a 4-0 lead.

Kyle Beach (Kelowna, BC/ Everett, WHL) rounded out the first-period scoring for Team White just 36 seconds after Wright’s goal, ending a nightmare opening 20 minutes for Bosch and Team Red.

Team Red was able to get on the board before the first period ended, however, as Tyler Cuma (Bowmanville, ON/ Ottawa, OHL) beat Team White goaltender Jacob DeSerres (Calgary, AB/ Seattle, WHL) between the legs on a penalty shot with just 17 seconds to go.

In addition to their 5-1 lead on the scoreboard, Team White held the advantage in shots on goal in the first period, 19-13.

Cuma’s late goal seemed to spark Team Red, who came out flying in the second period.

Chris Doyle (Charlottetown, PE/ PEI, QMJHL) got his team started just 35 seconds into the middle frame, batting a puck past DeSerres after a scramble in front of the Team White goal.

Team Red continued to apply the pressure, and peppered new Team White goaltender Kevin Poulin (Montreal, QC/ Victoriaville, QMJHL) after he replaced DeSerres near the midway point of the period.

It took until the 16-minute mark for Team Red to put one past Poulin, as Jimmy Bubnick (Saskatoon, SK/ Saskatoon Contacts, Midget AAA) poked the puck over the line to pull his team to within two at 5-3.

Just as Team White had done on their first-period powerplay, Team Red made theirs count in the second, as Nazem Kadri (London, ON/ Kitchener, OHL) made it a one-goal game and made the unthinkable comeback seem like much more of a reality.

Despite more Team Red pressure to open up the third period – including two missed penalty shots from Colten Teubert (White Rock, BC/ Regina, WHL) – Team White struck for the first goal of the final period when Jordan Hickmott (Mission, BC/ Medicine Hat, WHL) finished off a 3-on-2 by snapping a shot over the blocker of Peter Delmas (Bedford, NS/ Lewiston, QMJHL), who replaced Bosch in the second period.

Adam Henrique (Burford, ON/ Windsor, OHL) made it a one-goal game once again with just over three minutes go, flipping the puck over a sprawling Poulin to pull Team Red to within one at 6-5.

Poulin made sure his team kept the lead down the stretch by making a number of fantastic saves, including a spectacular glove stop off Jordan Eberle (Calgary, AB/ Regina, WHL) just 30 seconds after the Henrique goal, and David Toews (Winnipeg, MB/ Shattuck St. Mary’s, U.S. High School) finished it off with an empty net goal with only 38 seconds to go, sealing the victory for Team White.

Poulin finished with 13 saves on 15 shots in his 30 minutes of work, while Team White goaltending partner DeSerres stopped 17 of 20 shots. Team Red goaltenders turned aside 30 of 37 shots – Bosch stopped 18 of 23, while Delmas turned away 12 of 14.
