Bowden’s overtime winner gives Canada gold
Bradley Bowden (Orton, ON) scored 48 seconds into overtime, giving Canada a 1-0 win over Norway and the gold medal at the inaugural World Sledge Hockey Challenge on Saturday night.
After being stymied for 45 minutes by Norwegian goaltender Roger Johansen – who made 23 saves through three periods – Bowden snapped Canada’s first shot of the extra frame over Johansen’s glove to send the capacity crowd at the Capital News Centre into a frenzy.
Paul Rosen (Thornhill, ON) made nine saves in the Canadian goal to register the win and the shutout, and also picked up an assist on Bowden’s winner. Billy Bridges (Summerside, PE) also had an assist.
Bowden and Greg Westlake (Oakville, ON) finished tied for the team lead in scoring with seven points each for Canada, who have now fashioned a 13-1-1-1 record so far in 2006-07.
