2014 Olympic Winter Games (Men)

My Team Canada - Corb Lund

Goth girls to survivalists, bovines to bibles, antique pistols to vintage motorcycles: Alberta-born honky-tonker Corb Lund’s songcraft covers it all. Backed by his longtime band, The Hurtin’ Albertans, the JUNO Award recipient has won kudos in his native land; the Canadian Country Music Association named Lund its Roots Artist of the Year seven consecutive years from 2004-10, and again in 2013.

Lund grew up in southern Alberta, living on his family’s farm and ranches near Taber, Cardston and Rosemary. Lund left his hometown of Taber and moved to Edmonton, where he enrolled at Grant MacEwan College to study jazz guitar and bass, and cut his teeth in the 1990s as a member of the Canadian speed-metal band, the Smalls.

The DIY spirit lives with Lund, who traded his ax for an acoustic and has done everything from printing his band’s t-shirts to booking gigs to writing press releases. He tours regularly in Canada, the United States and Australia, including considerable time on the Canadian Prairies and in the American southwest.

Goaltenders
Corey Crawford
Roberto Luongo
Carey Price

WHY?: They'll probably go with Luongo because he's the most experienced Olympian. But Price has had a great season and Crawford proved himself as an elite goalie with Chicago's Stanley Cup win last year. My vote is for Luongo though, because the Twitterverse could use more @strombo Olympic tweets.

Defencemen
Jay Bouwmeester
Drew Doughty
Duncan Keith
Alex Pietrangelo
Brent Seabrook
P.K. Subban
Marc-Eduard Vlasic
Shea Weber

WHY?: Most were no brainers, but there were a few that were picked because keeping together every-day pairings was a consideration for me, like Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook (Chicago), and Alex Pietrangelo and Jay Bouwmeester (Blues). There’s lots of discussion about Subban being on the fence – crazy talk. He should be on this team.

Forwards
Patrice Bergeron
Logan Couture
Sidney Crosby
Matt Duchene
Ryan Getzlaf
Taylor Hall
Chris Kunitz
Rick Nash
Corey Perry
Patrick Sharp
Eric Staal
Martin St. Louis
John Tavares
Jonathan Toews

WHY?:  Made these picks with the help of beer, wings and Google searches with pals. About half were no brainers but there were a few that were picked because of chemistry; namely Chris Kunitz-Sidney Crosby, Corey Perry-Ryan Getzlaf and Patrick Sharp-Jonathan Toews. Having to leave out Giroux and Stamkos was tough, as was passing on some of the vets (Iggy, Richards, Thornton ... ESPECIALLY Iggy). Taylor Hall is there because you have to have an Oiler on the team.  Jamie Benn was omitted from the roster due to wearing my Oilers heart on my sleeve.
