My Team Canada - Chelsea Carey

The daughter of former Brier champion Dan Carey, who won the national championship in 1992 playing third for Vic Peters’ Manitoba rink, Chelsea Carey is making a name for herself both nationally and internationally.

A six-time competitor at the Manitoba junior championship, Carey won the 2000 provincial juvenile championship, and followed that up with a silver medal at nationals. The Winnipeg native was also the Manitoba high school champion in 2002.

She has won a number of titles on the World Curling Tour, most recently the 2012 Red Deer Curling Classic, and earned her first-ever Grand Slam title with a win at the 2010 Manitoba Lotteries Women’s Curling Classic. Her breakout came during the 2011-12 season, when her team was named World Curling Tour Breakthrough Team of the Year after a season that included a nationally-televised runner-up finish at the Canada Cup of Curling. Carey reached the final of the Manitoba Scotties Tournament of Hearts in 2011 and 2012, twice coming up just one win short of a berth in the national championship.

Goaltenders
Corey Crawford
Roberto Luongo
Carey Price

WHY?: Luongo you want for the experience, if nothing else. Even with the gold from Vancouver, I think he’s a better goalie than he gets credit for. Crawford has proven he can win, and from a “hot goalie” standpoint, you want him there, and Price is relatively solid; I don’t think he’d be the starter, but he’d be a good back-up. Outside those three, I think you have to consider a guy like Braden Holtby, who’s young and is close to earning a spot, and Marc-André Fleury, who was there in Vancouver but might be a little too Jekyll and Hyde right now.

Defencemen
Drew Doughty
Duncan Keith
Kristopher Letang
Alex Pietrangelo
Brent Seabrook
Marc Staal
P.K. Subban
Shea Weber

WHY?:The first four I found pretty easy – Weber, Keith, Seabrook and Pietrangelo. Those seem like no-brainers to me; I think you pair Keith and Seabrook together, and then a couple of big bodies together in Weber and Pietrangelo. After that it gets a little tougher. Subban has been impressive this year, while Doughty is just a good, solid defenceman, who has the experience from Vancouver, so I’d pair them together, and same with Letang and Staal. I considered guys like Boyle and Bouwmeester for experience, and Phaneuf for physicality, but not sure how big a role that will play on the bigger ice.

Forwards
Patrice Bergeron
Jeff Carter
Logan Couture
Sidney Crosby
Matt Duchene
Ryan Getzlaf
Claude Giroux
Andrew Ladd
Corey Perry
Michael Richards
Eric Staal
Steven Stamkos
John Tavares
Jonathan Toews

WHY?: Bergeron, Crosby and Toews … how do you not have those guys on the roster? Those seemed really obvious to me. Getzlaf, Giroux, Stamkos, Tavares and Perry were all the same kind of thing; it didn’t take me long to pick them. It got a little bit tougher from there. Duchene has been impressive, but I think he gets overlooked because the Avalanche haven’t been very good the last couple of years. Ladd is there partially because I’m a Jets fan, but mostly because he’s a solid player and a great leader who has a couple of Cup rings. It was really tough for me not to pick Joe Thornton; I think he’s phenomenal, but I think you need to build a line around him, and I wasn’t committed to doing that, and Patrick Sharp was right on the cusp for me as well. There’s a lot of young talent that’s left off, guys like Hall, Eberle and Evander Kane, but they’ll have their time in the future.
