GARDINER’S FIVE POINTS HELP CANADA TO YOUTH OLYMPIC BRONZE

INNSBRUCK, Austria – Reid Gardiner (Humboldt, Sask./Saskatoon Contacts, SMAAAHL) scored once and added four assists as Canada took home the bronze medal from the 2012 Winter Youth Olympic Games thanks to a 7-5 victory over the United States on Saturday.

Gardiner’s five points gave him a team-leading 12 (four goals, eight assists) in six games – not bad for a player who wasn’t on the original roster; he was the final player added after Carter Hill (Hay River, N.W.T./Grande Prairie, AMMHL) was unable to participate.

Ryan Gropp (Kamloops, B.C./Okanagan Hockey Academy, Midget AAA) finished with a hat trick, while Eric Cornel (Kemptville, Ont./Upper Canada, OEMHL) and Ryan Pilon (Duck Lake, Sask./Beardy’s, SMAAAHL) had a goal and an assist each as Canada scored four goals in 4:13 midway through the second period to turn a 3-2 lead into a 7-2 advantage.

“It feels really special, always great to be able to help out the team, but most importantly I’m happy we came away with the bronze medal,” Gropp said to iihf.com. “It was really tough to lose to the Finns in the semis but we told ourselves that we had to just forget about it and worry about the next game and focus for it like it was the gold medal game.”

Adam Brooks (Winnipeg, Man./Winnipeg Thrashers, MMAAAHL) had the other goal for the Canadians, who got 35 saves from Keven Bouchard (Métabetchouan, Que./Jonquière, LHMAAAQ) to backstop them to bronze.

Despite being outshot 13-7 in the opening period, Canada took a 3-1 lead to the dressing room and, after the Americans had scored early in the second, got goals from Brooks and Gardiner and a pair from Gropp less than five minutes apart to take a commanding four-goal lead.

Overall, the Canadians were outshot 40-19, including 18-5 in the third period when the U.S. tried to mount a comeback.
