2012-13 National Men's Team

SLOVAKIA DOWNS CANADA 5-2 AT DEUTSCHLAND CUP

MUNICH, Germany – Canada’s National Men’s Team slumped to its second straight defeat at the Deutschland Cup, falling 5-2 to Slovakia on Saturday.

Nigel Dawes and Karl Stewart had the goals for Canada (0-2), while Tyler Weiman made 27 saves.

Richie Regehr picked up two assists.

Libor Hudacek, Marcel Hossa and Peter Olvecky scored for the Slovaks (1-1) before Ivan Baranka and Juraj Mikus added empty-net goals late as Canada pulled its goalie.

“The score wasn't indicative of the effort,” Regehr said. “We were just a little too inconsistent and there were just too many penalties.

“We're very disappointed in the outcome but not in the effort.”

Germany (2-0) defeated Switzerland (1-1) in Saturday's other game.

The Canadian team roster is comprised of players in European pro leagues. There is no playoff format at the tournament. The team with the highest point total at the end of the round robin wins the title, meaning Canada has no chance of finishing first.

Canada led 1-0 after the first period on a goal by Dawes before Hudacek, Hossa and Olvecky scored in the second to give Slovakia a 3-1 lead after two.

Stewart scored midway through the third to bring Canada to within one, but the Slovaks put the game out of reach with back-to-back empty netters.
