STORR RECORDS SHUTOUT AS CANADA MOVES TO 2-0 AT DEUTSCHLAND CUP

FRANKFURT, GERMANY – Canada’s National Men’s Team will have a chance to play for gold following a 3-0 win over Switzerland on Saturday at the 2008 Deutschland Cup.

Canada is the only team without a loss heading into its final game of the round-robin tournament on Sunday against the host Germans (10:30 a.m. EST) in Mannheim. A win would give Canada its fourth Deutschland Cup title and first since 2005.

On Saturday, Mathieu Biron (Lac-St-Charles, QC), Justin Papineau (Ottawa, ON) and Derek Hahn (Elmira, ON) scored for the Canadians, while Jamie Storr (Brampton, ON) turned aside all 22 shots he faced for the shutout.

After a scoreless first period, Biron got the Canadians on the board with an unassisted effort just shy of the midway mark of the period.

The Swiss got into penalty trouble minutes after Biron’s goal, taking a pair of minors 26 seconds apart, and Papineau notched his second goal in as many games with the two-man advantage, giving Canada a little insurance heading into the final 20 minutes.

While Switzerland held a 10-9 advantage in shots on goal in the final frame, Storr did not allow a puck to get by, earning the clean sheet and setting Canada up for the tournament championship on Sunday.

Hahn scored into an empty net with just two seconds remaining to round out the scoring.

The game was the second meeting of the week between the two countries – Switzerland earned a 4-2 win over Canada in the Swiss Challenge on Tuesday in Rapperswil, SUI, although the Canadian entry for that game was entirely different than the one that took the ice Saturday in Frankfurt.

Canada’s team at the 2008 Deutschland Cup is made up of Canadian players playing professionally in Germany, as well as one from the Austrian league.

The loss dropped Switzerland to 1-1 at the tournament – it scored a 1-0 win over Germany in its tournament opener on Friday.
