2008-09 National Men's Team

Game Summary

Canada 3 - Energie Karlovy Vary 1 (Final)

POWER PLAY LEADS CANADA TO TOURNAMENT-OPENING WIN

DAVOS, Switzerland – Micki Dupont scored the game-winning goal on a second-period power play – one of three goals Canada scored with the man advantage – as the National Men’s Team opened the 2008 Spengler Cup with a 3-1 win over Energie Karlovy Vary on Friday.

Canada took advantage of an undisciplined Karlovy Vary – the Czech team took eight consecutive minor penalties in the second period – to open defense of its 2007 tournament title with a victory.

After a fast-paced, but scoreless, first period, the Canadians struck just shy of the midway point of the middle frame as Brad Isbister took a pass in the slot from Byron Ritchie and snapped a shot over the glove of Karlovy Vary netminder Lukas Mensator.

Lukas Pech pulled the Czechs squad even just minutes later, depositing his own rebound past Canadian goaltender Daren Machesney, before Canada’s special teams really took over.

Dupont blasted a shot from the point past Mensator on a two-man advantage to restore the Canadian lead, and Jean-Guy Trudel picked up a loose puck at the side of the net and made it a two-goal lead on another five-on-three just minutes after that.

Neither team found the back of the net in the third period, although the Czechs had a number of power play opportunities to get back into the game. The Canadians outshot Karlovy Vary 27-25, although it was the Czech team who held a 14-3 advantage after 20 minutes.

Canada returns to the ice at Valliant Arena on Saturday when it faces HC Davos, the tournament hosts. The game can be seen live on Rogers Sportsnet at 2 p.m. EST/11 a.m. PST.
