DAVOS, Switzerland (CP) -- Ryan Savoia scored two goals and Patrick DesRochers made 28 saves as Canada defeated Adler Mannheim 5-0 in its opening match at the Spengler Cup on Wednesday.

Craig Ferguson, Mike Maneluk and Jan Alston also scored for Canada.

"We took advantage of our speed, got some great goaltending and played a really solid game," Canadian head coach Mike Pelino said. "It's a good start to the tournament. It was an all-around team effort."

Canada outshot the German club 38-28 and led 2-0 after the first period and 4-0 after the second.

Also Wednesday, defending champion and host HC Davos defeated Czech club Sparta Prague 3-2.

Five teams are participating in the round-robin event, with the top two finishers advancing to the tournament final. The Canadian team is comprised of minor pro players and players under contract to European club teams.

Canada resumes play Thursday against Finnish club TPS Turku.
