1995 IIHF World Junior Championship, Round Robin
January 2, 1995 – Red Deer, AB

- CANADA 8, RUSSIA 5 -

Canada had won back-to-back gold medals and was back on home soil for the 1995 IIHF World Junior Championship. The 1994-95 NHL lockout meant the Canadians would ice arguably their best team ever, including 12 NHL first-round draft picks from the 1993, 1994 and 1995 drafts. Everything was set for a third consecutive gold medal in Red Deer, and Canada’s National Junior Team delivered.

After wins over the Ukraine, Germany, the USA, the Czech Republic and Finland, Canada faced off with Russia in their second-to-last game. With the Russians having lost to the USA in their first game, and Sweden tying Finland, a win over Russia would give Canada their third consecutive gold.

After a back-and-forth opening 30 minutes that saw three goals from each team, Jamie Rivers and Eric Daze scored goals 1:59 apart near the end of the second period, giving Canada a 5-3 lead heading into the intermission.

Needing a big start to the third period to put away the pesky Russians, the Canadians had a record-breaking 38 seconds, getting powerplay goals from Todd Harvey (2:29), Jeff O’Neill (2:48) and Marty Murray (3:07) to ice the game, set a Canadian World Junior record for fastest three powerplay goals, and clinch the country’s third straight world title.

The 1995 team made its case for the best National Junior Team of all-time two days later, topping Sweden 4-3 to become the first Canadian team to go 7-0 at the IIHF World Junior Championship.
