The Swiss were surprise medalists at the 1998 World Junior Championship, backstopped to the bronze medal by the brilliant goaltending of David Aebischer, who was named the top goaltender in the tournament.

Aebischer won't be back this year, but Michael Riesen, a swift, gifted right winger who led Switzerland with four goals at the 1998 Championship will be.

At the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, Riesen made history by becoming the first Swiss player ever to be selected in the first round when the Edmonton Oilers chose him 14th overall. Riesen will be playing in his third World Junior Championship ? he also scored four goals for his country at the 1997 World Junior Hockey Championship, which was held in Geneva.

Switzerland, powered by a strong development system, is an emerging force in internationall hockey. Its men's team, for example, finished fourth at the World Hockey Championship.

They could surprise some teams at the World Hockey Championship this year, as well.

Top 3 Prospects: Björn Christen, Marc Reichert, Flavien Conne
