At the 1998 World Junior Hockey Championship, it took an overtime goal by Niklas Hagman, the son of Finnish hockey legend, Matti Hagman, to defeat an excellent Russian team in the gold-medal game.

It can't come as good news to the other teams competing at the 1999 World Junior Hockey Championship to know that Russia has a strong nucleus of 12 players returning from the silver medal-winning team.

One of the key returning players should be Vitali Vishnevski, who played for Russia last year as a 17-year-old. Vishnevsky was selected fifth overall at the 1998 NHL Entry Draft by the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, who were obviously dazzled with the Russian defenceman's puckhandling and playmaking skills. Vishnevsky is considered a brilliant powerplay quarterback.

Artem Chubarov, who had five points for Russia in the seven tournament games last year, leads a strong group of returning forwards for head coach Peter Vorobiov's team.

Top 3 Prospects: Denis Shvidky, Kirill Safronov, Evgeny Lapin
