GLENNIE’S GOALS LEAD WEST TO WIN

Strathroy, ON – Team Finland came on strong but couldn’t complete a comeback during its 6-4 loss to Team Canada West on Friday night in a tuneup game for the 2008 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

Team West led 5-2 with two minutes left in the third period, but two goals in less than a minute for Finland made things interesting. Team West iced the game with an empty-net goal by Brayden Schenn (Saskatoon, SK/Brandon, WHL).

Scott Glennie (Winnipeg, MB/Brandon, WHL) scored two goals to lead Team Canada West to the win.

Team West opened the scoring at 10:28. Garrett Mitchell (Regina, SK/Regina, WHL) streaked down the right side and took a shot on Finland’s Emo Suomalaien. That shot was stopped but the rebound went right to Jason Gardiner (Winnipeg, MB/Tri-City, WHL), who jammed in the loose puck to make it 1-0.

Team West made it 2-0 on Glennie’s first of the game at 12:38. Glennie snapped a shot from the slot, completing a nice passing play from Brayden Schenn (Saskatoon, SK/Brandon, WHL) and Alexander Pym (Winnipeg, MB/Regina, WHL).

Team West scored two more goals in the second. At 10:46, Jared Cowen (Saskatoon, SK/Spokane, WHL) took the puck to the net and made a perfect pass to fellow Saskatoon native Jimmy Bubnick (Kamloops, WHL), whose one-timer beat Finland’s Joni Ortio and it was 3-0. Both Team West and Finland switched goaltenders at the 10:16 mark of the second.

Finland cut into West’s lead at 14:32 on a great shot by Erik Haula. His quick shot beat Graham Hildebrand (Saskatoon, SK/Beardy’s, SMAAAHL).

Glennie got his second of the game late in the second and West led 4-2 going into the final 20 minutes.

Adam Hughesman (East St. Paul, MB/Tri-City, WHL) scored at 1:51 of the third to make it 5-2 and West seemed to be in complete control. But two quick goals by Finland made it 5-4.

A crowd of 600 packed the Gemini Sportsplex and the fans were treated to an exciting game.
