Edge School for Athletes 3 - Okanagan Hockey Academy 4 (SO)

OKANAGAN HOCKEY ACADEMY BEATS EDGE SCHOOL FOR ATHLETES IN HISTORY-MAKING SHOOTOUT

by Jesse Pelletier

Winnipeg, Man. – A shoot-out decided the first game for two solid western teams Thursday afternoon at the Iceplex, as the Okanagan Hockey Academy defeated Edge School for Athletics 4-3 in a seesaw affair that saw four lead changes.

Okanagan Hockey Academy’s Emily Clark (Saskatoon, Sask.) had a goal, an assist, and the shoot-out winner, while goaltender Hayley Dowling (Port Alberni, B.C.) recorded the victory.  She made 21 saves in the game.

“We’ve never beaten them,” Clark said. “It’s the first time in OHA history.”

Edge School for Athletes opened the scoring in the first on the power play, as Alex Serpico (Calgary, Alta.) found the back of the net with a nice backhand shot.  But OHA would not reply until 6:04 of the second frame, as Hannah Miller (North Vancouver, B.C.) finished off a nice feed from Alexa Ranahan (Salmon Arm, B.C.), also on the power play.

The teams remained tied at one through two periods, with Edge holding a slight 18-15 shot advantage.  Whistles were few and far between as both teams played an up-tempo, quick transition game.

The OHA took its first lead of the game two minutes into the final frame with Clark’s marker, but Edge wouldn’t let it last as they scored two goals only 1:30 apart to take a 3-2 lead.  Cassandra Vilgrain (Calgary, Alta.) and Daria O'Neil (Cochrane, Alta.), both unassisted, had the Edge’s third period goals.  With just over nine minutes remaining, Payge Pena (Maple Ridge, B.C.) tied the game back up for OHA with help from Clark and Miller after Edge failed to clear its zone.

Overtime would solve nothing between the two clubs, albeit there were a few good chances from Okanagan Hockey Academy.  Emma Pincott (Cochrane, Alta.), Edge goaltender, was solid with five saves in OT, and 26 overall.

“She kept us in it,” Edge head coach Scott Fukami said following the game. “They had some really good pressure on us and that’s what we expect from Emma – to make saves and keep us in the game, and she did that.”

Okanagan Academy head coach Rebecca Russell believed this was just the game her team needed to start the tournament.  “I think it set the tempo with two good teams battling hard.  We knew it was going to go right to the end.”

The OHA’s next game is Thursday night against St. Mary’s Academy at 7:00 p.m. CT, while the Edge School for Athletes faces off Friday at 9:30 a.m. CT, also against St. Mary’s.
