LEONARD EARNS SHUTOUT IN 2-0 WIN FOR ONTARIO RED

DAWSON CREEK, B.C. – An early lead for Ontario Red was enough for a 2-0 shutout win Wednesday afternoon over Atlantic, with Kristin Gilmour (Millgrove, Ont.) and Kristyn Capizzano (Oakville, Ont.) both scoring in the first for the defending champions first victory at this year’s national championship.

For both squads it was a strong start in Dawson Creek, however, with Atlantic netminder Rebecca Weagle (Lunenburg, N.S.) facing a whopping 39 Ontario Red shots, and her teammates skating hard from first puck drop to final buzzer to keep the score close. Ontario Red took the gold medal for its seventh straight national championship title last season, while Atlantic finished in fourth at the 2011 National Women’s Under-18 Championship in Saguenay, Que.

Gilmour got the ball rolling for Ontario Red at 17:11 in the first, capitalizing on an assist from Alexandra Moore (Napanee, Ont.) and a power-play opportunity to crack the goose egg on the board. Hilary Lloyd (Toronto, Ont.) found Breanne Wilson Bennett (Markham, Ont.), who fed Capizzano about a minute and a half later to make it 2-0 at the end of the period.

Despite falling behind in the first, the Atlantic Canadians held their ice through two periods to keep Ontario Red at bay. It was a fast-paced game sure to entertain any hockey fan, and was an exciting sign of what’s to come here at the EnCana Events Centre.

Atlantic next hits the ice at 4 p.m. MT on Thursday against Saskatchewan, while Ontario Red plays Thursday night at 7 p.m. against host team British Columbia. Check out live statistics for all games at www.HockeyCanada.ca/NWU18C, and follow www.Twitter.com/HC_NWU18C for updates from the arena.
