Dropping the “ceremonial” first puck was Hazel McCallion , Mayor of Mississauga, who once played hockey in the 1940’s.  Wearing the stripes for this game were Stephanie Normand (referee), Christine Pellerin and Debbie Bland.  Yes, women not only play hockey, they officiate it too!  Minding the net for the home team – Host Ontario – was Sami Jo Small.  Her counterpart at the other end for Team Ontario was Lisa Moreland.

Both teams came out looking rather tentative, feeling each other out and trying hard not to make any mistakes that could lead to that all-important first goal.  The period was rather uneventful as there was no scoring, but there was plenty of action, with play frequently going end-to-end. There were some good chances, however. The Host team started off strong, taking a four shots to two lead until Team Ontario went on the power play.   By the time the penalty was over, they had doubled their total and by the time they completed their second man advantage, they led eight to four in shots.  With just under a minute to go in the period, Team Ontario took a minor for body check and the Host Team went to work.   They had some quality shots, but weren’t able to put anything behind Sami Jo Small before the period ended.  Shots on goal favoured Team Ontario, nine to six.

The Host team went on the power play again, early in the second and found themselves giving up two good short-handed chances to Vicki Sonohara.  The first time, her shot was blocked by one of the “D” on the Aeros , then Sonohara put the shot on net but it was stopped by the Aeros tender, Small.  Dosser had two chances to score midway through the period, but was stopped both times by a determined Sami Jo Small.  With Cheryl Pounder in the box for holding, Team Ontario finally ended the scoring drought.  Small made the initial save on the stick side but gave up a big rebound and Sonohara made no mistake about putting it in the net on Small’s glove side.  Coley Dosser and Kerry Welland picked up assists.  The game was stopped temporarily as one of the linesman crumpled to the ice after wearing a stick to the head.  She received attention on the bench of Team Ontario, and returned to the game moments later to a rousing round of applause.  Shots on goal favoured Team Ontario by a margin of nine to five.

The Host team tied it on a short-handed marker as Team Ontario was caught on a line change.  As Team Ontario tried to chip it out of the zone, the puck was knocked out of the air by Heather Logan.  She broke away with the puck, tried a deke, then shot the puck glove side.  The puck went into the net at the same time that Moreland was trying to slide her pad back to block the shot. Game tied at one apiece.

At the 17:11 mark offsetting minors for roughing after the whistle put top scorer, Jenna Hefford in the box, all but eliminating her from playing during the final minutes of the game.  Danielle Ashley was sent to the box for roughing at 17:44 and her teammates from Host Team took control of the puck.  With 74 seconds left in the game, Jennifer Botterill took a pass from Sommer West and didn’t disappoint the many Host Ontario fans, as she scored a short-handed marker.  Team Ontario pulled their goalie for the extra attacker hoping to even the score, but the defensive play of Team Host Ontario proved to be too much as Kristy Zamora took a minor with seven seconds to go, and forced a face-off in Team Ontario’s end.  Moreland was forced to return to her net as the final seconds ticked down.

Players of the game were Sami Jo Small for Host Ontario while Vicki Sonohara took the honours for Team Ontario.
