2005 Esso Women's Nationals

The 2005 Esso Women’s Nationals represents the first time that British Columbia is sending a select team, rather than a club team, to the Championships.

The first phase of the selection process was an open identification camp April 16-18, 2004 at Planet Ice, Maple Ridge.

Based on the results of the initial camp, as well as scouting during the season, a selection camp was organized for December 18-19, 2004 at the Tilbury Recreation Centre in Delta.  The format for the camp was a four team tournament, including two teams of players vying for a position on the BC Senior Team, as well as the BC Under-18 team, including some players up for consideration for the Senior team, and a Select team of AAA and AA players from the South Coast Female Amateur Hockey League.

Three of the players are returning to Esso Women’s Nationals for the second consecutive year including Alycia Matthews, Jennifer Price, and Courtney Unruh.

Five of the players on the Senior Team also played for this year’s Bronze Medal winning U18 teamat the 2005 Women’sl Under-18 Hockey Challenge in Samon Arm, BC, including Melissa Anderson, Ashley Mahr, Alycia Matthews, Elyce Thomas, and Courtenay Unruh.  Melissa Anderson distinguished herself at the 2005 Women’s Under-18 Hockey Challenge, as the youngest player on the Under-18 Team BC, and now the youngest player on the Senior Team BC, received the tournament Most Valuable Player Award while scoring a tournament best 6 goals in 5 games. Courtenay Unruh finished second in the tournament with 6 assists in 5 games.

In addition to representing British Columbia on the Under-18 team, and the Senior Team BC, Alycia Matthews is also a member of Canada’s Under 22 team.
