Quebec captures 2002 Esso Women's National Hockey Championship

Arnprior, ON - Team Quebec captured the coveted Abby Hoffman Cup (Gold Medal) at the 2002 Esso Women's National Hockey Championship with a 1-0 victory over Team Ontario (Beatrice Aeros). The game was played in front of a jam-packed crowd of 2,817 people at the Nick Smith Centre in Arnprior, Ontario.

Quebec goaltender Kim St-Pierre's fourth shutout of the championship led Quebec to their eighth Esso Women's National Hockey Championship crown. St-Pierre stopped 43 shots for the gold medal victory.
Esso Nationals Most Sportsmanlike Player, Lisa Marie Breton of Team Quebec, scored the game's only goal at the 10:33 mark of the second period.

Earlier on Sunday, the Host team, Team Ontario (Brampton Thunder), defeated Team Alberta 5-1 to capture the Maureen McTeer Cup in the bronze medal game. Team Canada gold medallists Lori Dupuis (2 goals), Jayna Hefford (2 goals) and Vicky Sunohara (2 assists) each had two points in the victory. Marie-France Morin recorded the win for the hosts, stopping 24 of 25 shots.

The two Team Ontario medals now give the province sole position of first place on the all-time medal list of the Esso Women's National Championship with 21 medals (7 gold, 6 silver and 8 bronze), while Quebec sits in second place with 18 medals (8 gold, 5 silver and 5 bronze).
